We live in a free world, but do we actually know if every one of us is free, especially in our social lives?

Human being learned to be social beings and this lead to form various societies with various social norms based upon geographical area/region, politics, religions, traditions, professions, etc., which enables us to live with more intelligent methods.

Be it any species on this planet, all of them are divided into 2 groups – Male and Female.

Let’s come to our own species which has evolved much faster and considered to be the superior species on this planet.

So now let’s take a deep dive into our own social lives with respect to the key topic of this article – Gender. There are still some situations where we don’t consider everything to be free in this world, especially when the gender discrimination comes into picture.

Let’s go through 7 important and identified aspects:

1) Birth: When a baby is born the doctor or nurse says, “Congrats you have a baby boy” or “Congrats you have a baby girl”. Ordinary lines but the parents take it wholeheartedly and enjoy the moment. Later, the actual struggle begins for them when they start being practical under pressure of their respective social or traditional norms. Parents start preparing their list of Dos and Don’ts. This goes on from childhood to adulthood; from educations to career path and finally getting married and repeat the whole cycle like the parents. It has been observed that the parents follow completely different plans based upon gender without even knowing if their kids really like it or not. But it goes on because it has happened from ages and it’s a predefined non ending process.

2) “Boys don’t cry”- We often see people doing it or done it ourselves too. But we never heard anyone saying, “Girls don’t cry”. This kind of manipulation is happening to everyone since childhood. It’s a fact that physically a boy and girl different from each other but they are born in the same manner. They get the same care and treatment before birth. Then why do the parent set priorities after birth and start differentiating in this manner?

We must understand and accept that girls are much more heroic than boys.

3) “Unisex” – Everyone knows the meaning of this word only while buying clothes or in gyms, salons, restrooms and few selected places. We brag upon gender equality but never implement it in ground level. We are in 2022 and in spite of several co-ed schools/institutes we still can find separate schools for boys or girls in many places. well those schools/institutes may have their own valid reasons but it is leading to gender inequality.

Similarly we see inequality in professions too. This is due to certain assumptions that what boys can do, girls can’t and vice versa. But there are numerous examples where gender has nothing to do with the types of jobs.

4) Appearance Standards: It is pre-occupied notion that boys and girls must possess or follow certain standards in their looks irrespective of their real characteristics. It does not matter if boys don’t shave their body hair but girls must shave every inch of their body. Boys have option to either grow a tummy or maintain flat abs but girls must stay slim and fit and follow strict diets, so that their parents can get them married to the most eligible bachelor in their society who may not be handsome but will be financially sound and higher in status. Same goes for their choice of fashion, interiors, bikes, etc. where these girls can't have everything of their own choice. Mostly girl go through a lot of compromises compared to boys. But now the world is changing and people are aware that it is time to stop judging the books by their covers. However, thanks to most of the males who actually understand females and make them comfortable by all means.

5) Relationships Status: In the current era of social media we all like to mention our relationship status in our profiles. But have we ever observed that how viewers react to it. If an attractive girl is mentioning in her profile that she is single then guys just start finding ways to connect with her. Similarly it might happen with single boys too, but it is considered way cooler in their case. Well we all have this kind of tendency of judging others without even knowing and get into wrong perceptions; in fact mostly about girls/women. We only care what single girls do in their daily life, number of boys she talks, her habits, etc. and if we find anything odd then instantly we give a character certificate against her. This happens to married women, widows or divorcees too. Based on assumptions, people start spreading rumours which some or the other way harm those ladies. And the worst is when in case of failures or undesired situations, it is observed that boys often gain sympathy and girls face criticism. Certain things are personal for both boys or girls, but still boys are considered cool and girls aren't. For example, people are least bothered if boys are virgin or not. However, in case of girls they will pay attention as if it was some breaking news about an earthquake of higher magnitude. Well things are different in now because females have been dealing with it strongly and finding their way out.

6) Consent: This point is derived from the previous point of relationship status. When people start judging others they start assuming and take things for granted too, without even knowing them. Perhaps this is the reason for several crimes like eve teasing, molestation, acid attacks, rape, etc. Victim can be male or female but, we all know who suffers the most. There are 2 things upon which any relationship depends - either agreeing or disagreeing.

So, one must understand and respect other's decision. Humiliating or forcing results in unwanted consequences. The irony here is that if the victim is a female then she is blamed for not being in her limits. Why are there limits for the female and not for male? A single girl is often advised not to hang out with boys, wear provoking or exposing clothes, etc. Even the widows or divorced women are put into restrictions because they are assumed to be available. Whereas, with a man it is still considered cool. It’s time we act mature and not poke into their lives.

7) Orientation: The very Male and Female bonding has been maintaining the balance on this planet from ages. Now we are witnessing a revolution where every individual gets his or her own freedom to choose their partner. The world has gradually accepted it and now celebrating as well. This new freedom to gender or sexual orientation has proven the world that love is the ultimate truth, no matter with whom.

To summarize, we are the greatest species of this universe. So, let’s not allow these petty things to manipulate our minds and hinder mankind's further evolution. Somehow we have overcome our mentality towards differentiating based upon geography, religion, racism, politics and many such aspects. (Thanks to those few eye opening print, news, social and other kinds of media these days for educating about the real world at our finger tips) Also, we proudly call ourselves social beings. However, from the very beginning till date we are yet to free ourselves from gender related mentalities and practices, every time and everywhere in this so called free world. So, from human beings to become a complete social being, social freedom with respect to gender should be a key criteria.
